Bronny James’ cardiac arrest is likely due to a congenital heart defect.

USC’s freshman guard, Bronny James, the son of Los Angeles Lakers’ superstar LeBron James, is on track to make a triumphant return to the basketball court in the very near future.

Bronny James heart defect

This encouraging update comes after Bronny suffered a cardiac arrest during a workout session in July, as conveyed by a spokesperson for the James family in a statement released on Friday.

The underlying cause behind Bronny James’ unexpected cardiac arrest has been identified as a congenital heart defect. This condition, existing from birth, perturbed the normal development of the heart or the surrounding blood vessels before he was even born. Following the initial assessment at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, further evaluations were conducted at esteemed medical institutions, including the Mayo Clinic and the Atlantic Health-Morristown Medical Center in New Jersey, to understand the extent of the condition.

Speaking on behalf of the family, the spokesperson remarked, “It is an anatomically and functionally significant Congenital Heart Defect which can and will be treated.”

The family remains steadfast in their optimism regarding Bronny’s complete recovery and his impending return to the basketball court. While they intend to provide periodic updates to the media, they earnestly request respect for their privacy during this time.

Bronny James recovered

Bronny James was discharged from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center just three days after his cardiac arrest incident, which took place on July 24 at USC’s Galen Center.

Interestingly, this incident occurred nearly a year after another USC athlete, Trojans center Vincent Iwuchukwu, experienced a heart-related collapse during a workout. Vincent Iwuchukwu managed to make a successful return to the court in January and played in several games during his freshman year.

Before his health setback, James had recently joined USC in May as an exceptionally promising five-star prospect.

With the anticipation of Bronny’s return, the Trojans are poised to compete for the Pac-12 title and secure a spot in the NCAA tournament.

Alongside the resurgence of James, USC’s roster boasts the experienced presence of Boogie Ellis and the addition of Isaiah Collier, who was hailed as ESPN’s top recruit in the 2023 class.
