Next year, Nancy Pelosi plans to run for re-election to the US House.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, aged 83, has announced her intention to seek reelection in the US House next November, as stated by the California Democrat on Friday.

In a message shared on X, Nancy Pelosi expressed, “Now, more than ever, our city needs us to champion San Francisco’s values and drive our recovery forward. Our nation also requires us to demonstrate that our flag still symbolizes liberty and justice for ALL. This is why I am seeking reelection — and I humbly request your vote. -Nancy.”

Nancy Pelosi’s decision to run for reelection signifies an extension of her lengthy tenure on Capitol Hill, which commenced with her victory in a special election in June 1987.

This solidifies her position as a prominent figure in Democratic politics both in Washington and on the national stage. Throughout her career, Nancy Pelosi has been a trailblazer for women in politics, although she has also been a polarizing figure in American politics, making her a significant target for Republican criticism.

Nancy Pelosi has previously served as House Speaker twice, initially from 2007 to 2011 as the first woman to hold this position, and she reclaimed the gavel in 2019. She stepped down as Speaker and Democratic leader in January when Republicans assumed control of the chamber. Her successor, House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, has since assumed the role.

There had been questions surrounding Pelosi’s future in Congress after her husband, Paul, endured a brutal attack in their San Francisco home in October 2022.

In a recent interview with CNN’s Chris Wallace, Pelosi remarked that she does not miss being Speaker.

This announcement coincides with a period of increased scrutiny regarding the age, health, and capacity to serve of several other prominent politicians on Capitol Hill. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, at 81, has faced intense scrutiny after appearing to have frozen up during interactions with reporters on two recent occasions.

Senator Dianne Feinstein, aged 90, has also encountered scrutiny due to her appearing increasingly frail following her return to Capitol Hill after an extended absence due to her recovery from shingles. Pelosi has come to Feinstein’s defense after fellow Democrats called for her resignation due to health concerns.

During a stroll down a Capitol complex hallway in late May, Pelosi took a moment to express her discontent with a recent news story that raised concerns about Feinstein’s slow recuperation.

At the time, she attributed the criticism of Feinstein to “the left” but added, “If she were a man, you wouldn’t even hear about it. You know it, and I know it. I won’t name important senators who were committee chairs who were in worse condition.” This was said within earshot of several aides and other reporters.
